Negative Effects Of Sexism In Advertising - 898 Words

Large corporations will do what it takes to sell their products. Sex sells and has for a long time there for businesses exploit this while negative stereo types are associated with women. This may not seem like an issue for some however the sexism people see in advertisements find their way into the status quo. Young children even educated adults absorb the information they see in advertisements and deem what they represent appropriate and then reproduce it essentially dehumanizing women. Vintage advertisements like â€Å"mickeys† have been scrutinized for objectifying women to gain sales, as we look back at these sexist ads today we can see some of those traits in the modern-day advertisement industry. To fix this objectification of women†¦show more content†¦It is important that we try to fix this issue with a solution. The solution needs to be able to get rid of advertisements that exploit the female body and impose negative stereotypes. It’s important to un derstand the reality of the task which is that you cannot ban completely all advertising that shows the female body but Advertising such as the Mickeys Ad is clearly has negative intentions shown by the image itself and the quotation â€Å"The first thing I noticed was her big mouth†. We must be able to find a solution that fixes the issues but does not control the industry too much as to where it is seen as over the top. There are a few solutions available. One solution is to form a governing body that goes through all advertisement in order to limit what can and cannot be shown to millions of people on all different modes of media. Another option would be to form a group to protest against the negative stereotypes in advertisements. Finally, the last option would be to create a group whom promotes positive body image in the hope that businesses would join together and unite to rid the advertisement industry of the negative stereotypes. There are multiple possible solutions however some are better than other. One solution is superior to the others. A governing body should be formed that looks over all advertising for appropriateness.
